Oval body shape
The waist measures the same as or more than the bust and hip, so the silhouette is fullest through the middle.
Also called apple, round.

A worked example
Three measurements that produce a oval result, run through the calculator itself. The ratios below are its own output, so if a threshold changed and this example stopped producing this shape, the build would fail rather than the page quietly going out of date.
| Bust | 95 cm |
|---|---|
| Waist | 97 cm |
| Hip | 96 cm |
| Bust against hip | -1.0% |
|---|---|
| Waist against bust | -2.1% smaller |
| Waist against hip | -1.0% smaller |
| Waist definition | Straighter |
- Bust against hip. Within 5% either way counts as balanced. Yours is balanced.
- Waist against bust. How far the waist draws in from the bust measurement.
- Waist against hip. How far the waist draws in from the hip measurement.
- Waist definition. A waist at least 25% smaller than both bust and hip is conventionally called defined. Yours draws in -2.1% at the narrower of the two.
Telling it apart from what it gets confused with
Oval or rectangle?
Whether the waist is the widest measurement. If it draws in at all, even slightly, the classification is rectangle. If it equals or exceeds bust and hip, it is this one.
What is worth knowing about it
This category carries more freight than the other four, and it is worth separating the measurement from the commentary. What our tool reports is that of three circumferences, the middle one is the largest. That is all it reports. It does not measure weight, it does not calculate BMI, and it makes no health claim of any kind — nor could it, since three tape measurements cannot support one.
The garment guidance is the same kind of thing as for every other shape: skimming rather than cinching through the middle generally hangs better, structured fabrics hold a line where clingy ones follow the body, and a V or scoop neckline lengthens the visual line of the torso. Useful if you are choosing a shirt. Not a verdict on anything.
What it means for clothes
- Garments that skim rather than cinch through the middle generally sit better.
- A defined shoulder line and a V or scoop neckline lengthen the visual line of the torso.
- Structured fabrics hold a shape; very clingy ones follow the body exactly.
All of this is about how garments hang, which is a question about cloth rather than about you. Sizing systems are drafted around assumptions, and a shape that ready-to-wear serves badly is a drafting assumption failing rather than a body failing to cooperate.
Measure rather than guess
The body shape calculator takes three tape measurements and shows every ratio and threshold behind the result. No weight, no BMI, no ideal, and nothing is uploaded — the arithmetic runs in your browser.
These categories come from pattern drafting rather than from anatomy: they describe where a garment needs room. They are not a taxonomy of people, they carry no health meaning, and nothing here scores or ranks anyone. Three circumferences cannot support a claim about health and this tool does not make one.
