Diamond face shape
Narrow at the forehead and the jaw, wide at the cheekbones — both ends, by a measurable margin.
Measure your own face shapeWhat the measurements say
Cheekbones clearly the widest point, with both the forehead and the jaw narrower.
The rule that produces it: Forehead and jaw both more than 4 points below typical, so the face is narrow at both ends.
A worked example
These are tape measurements that produce a diamond result. They are checked against the classifier itself, so if the rule ever changed and this example stopped producing this shape, the build would fail rather than the page quietly misleading you.
| Forehead width | 108 mm |
|---|---|
| Face width at cheekbones | 145 mm |
| Jaw width | 104 mm |
| Hairline to chin | 195 mm |
| Ratio | This face | Typical |
|---|---|---|
| Length over width | 1.14 | 1.15 |
| Forehead over width | 0.74 | 0.86 |
| Jaw over width | 0.72 | 0.8 |
The length is the hairline-to-chin measurement with 29 mm subtracted, because the photo tool measures from a point on the forehead that sits below the hairline. The tape tool explains that conversion and why it matters.
Telling it apart from what it gets confused with
This is the part most pages on the subject skip, because you cannot write it without a classifier to disagree with. Each of these comes down to one measurement.
Diamond or heart?
Whether the forehead is narrow too. Both have a narrow jaw; heart pairs it with a wide forehead, diamond with a narrow one. The forehead measurement decides it on its own.
Diamond or oval?
How far below typical both ends sit. Every face is narrower at the forehead and jaw than at the cheekbones — that is what a face is. Diamond requires both to be more than 4 points below their typical values, which is a real margin rather than the ordinary taper.
What is worth knowing about it
Diamond is rare, and the first version of this tool made it common by accident. The rule tested only whether the cheekbones were the widest point — which is the signature of an oval face, and of most faces. Four out of six test photographs came back diamond.
The fix was to express the rule as a deviation from what faces actually measure rather than from an abstract idea of balance. Both the forehead and the jaw have to sit more than 4 points below typical: the forehead under 0.82 of the cheekbones against a typical 0.86, and the jaw under 0.76 against a typical 0.80. Narrower than the cheekbones is not enough, because everyone is.
Because both deciding measurements are widths, this is a category a tape measure can identify as reliably as a photograph — which is not true of round, oblong or oval. If a tape puts you here, the result is about as solid as our methods get.
Glasses
Frames with detail or width at the brow line broaden the narrowest part. Very narrow frames disappear against wide cheekbones.
Frame shape is the smaller half of the question — the sizes have to fit as well, and those are measurable. Find frame sizes that fit your face, or decode the numbers inside a pair you already own.
Hair
Width at the forehead and jaw, and avoiding styles pulled tight at the temples.
What each haircut does to these proportions, stated as geometry rather than as a verdict — filtered by what your hair texture can actually hold.
How to find out whether this is your face
Guessing from photographs is unreliable in a specific direction: people tend to pick whichever category they have read most about. Both of our tools report the ratio, the threshold it was compared against, and the runner-up shape when the call was close.
- Face shape detector — from a photo, measured in millimetres, corrected for head turn. Nothing is uploaded.
- Face shape from a tape measure — four measurements, no camera, and honest about which half of the answer a tape can deliver.
These categories are a convenience rather than a fact. Faces vary continuously across every measurement and the boundaries are lines drawn through that continuum, so a great many faces sit close enough to one that a small change in how the measurement is taken puts them in the next category along. Nothing here scores or ranks anyone's appearance.
